If you’ve got the basics of pitching, you have to know the advanced ways you can use your pitching skills. Baseball depends heavily on the pitch of the players as well. If you’ve strengthened yourself for any baseball game and have finally made some victories in the past, you’re ready to one-up your skills in pitching.
1. Grip
Your grip is a small, yet very important detail in baseball. Understand that you don’t usually use five fingers to grip the ball. You need to act fast. Your index, middle fingers and thumb are very important in terms of gripping. Practice gripping the ball with these three fingers as they allow you more control in making special throws during a pitch.
2. Targeting Pitches
You first square up to your target catcher before you ever throw a ball into the air. Squaring up means that your knees, ankles, non-throwing shoulder and hip is facing the target. Extending your non-throwing arm to the air adds more force to your throw. The attack of your throwing arm depends on the style of pitch you are to throw. If you’re throwing a curve ball, an additional force from your fingers is needed to make the curve successful.
3. Arm Angles
Now that the grip and targeting is perfected, the arm angles are very important to learn next. The different types of pitches depend solely on the angle of the arm and the use of the three fingers during throws. Knowing the velocity points of throws is important. For example, when throwing a pitch, your right arm should catapult the ball into a straight line. Swinging your arm downward affects the angle of your throw. Remember to take into consideration the force your arm will deliver upon the launch of the ball from your hand.
